CAN THE MOSAIC BE REMOVED FROM THE FRAME?
The frame of the mosaic is a permanent part of the artwork. When the glass mosaic is created, the first step in the process is adhering a solid sheet of clear glass to the frame being used. This creates the "canvas" for the artwork. Not only does this create an aesthetic clean edge for the artwork, it acts to stabilize the piece, create a dam for the grout, and provide an attachment point for hardware to hang the piece. I primarily use locally sourced repurposed wood frames and windows for most of the mosaics.
CAN THE MOSAIC ARTWORK BE DISPLAYED OUTDOORS?
Outdoor display is not recommended for the stained glass mosaic artworks. The effects of wind, rain, and temperature variations can potentially deteriorate the artwork over time.
HOW CAN I DISPLAY THE GLASS MOSAIC ARTWORK?
Stained glass mosaics are most beautiful when natural lighting backlights the artwork, making it "glow". The easiest display option is to hang the artwork in a window, or on the ledge of a window. All mosaic panels come with screw eye hardware for easy hanging. Lightweight chain is a great option for hanging and can be purchased and cut to desired length at a hardware store.
A sunny window is not a necessity to enjoy stained glass. In fact, stained glass looks very beautiful in a dark room with just a bit of light backlighting the piece, much the way stained glass windows glow in a dark cathedral.
ARE THERE MORE ARTWORKS THAN THOSE LISTED?
The Etsy shop is my storefront and has all the currently available artworks listed.
I occasionally show my works at regional art shows as well as having several pieces for sale at Haldimand Artworks in Dunnville, Ontario.
Regional shows will be announced on the business Facebook page as well as on this site.
Local purchasers can save on shipping by picking up a piece in person from my home.
WHAT IS A MOSAIC?
A mosaic is an artwork where pieces, tesserae, are assembled in a pattern to create an image. Tesserae can be many things including tile, stone, stained glass, or any number of found objects such as broken china or buttons. The craft of creating mosaics dates back to 3000 BC. Ancient mosaics were primarily crafted from stone or pebbles and decorated walls, floors and ceilings often depicting allegorical imagery.
Modern mosaics are incorporated commonly in architectural details, public art installations, and have gained popularity as an art form for all ages
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GLASS MOSAICS AND LEADED STAINED GLASS?
Glass mosaics often use the same colourful glass as leaded stained glass. When glass mosaics are created on another sheet of glass (glass-on-glass mosaics), they create a colourful effect reminiscent of leaded stained glass. However, the detail, and freedom in image creation that can be achieved with a stained glass mosaic are much greater than in typical stained glass leaded works.
